FAFSA Application Process: A Step-By-Step Guide

  1. Obtain the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The form is available from high schools, public libraries, and colleges. An electronic version is available from the Department of Education web site at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
  2. Complete your tax returns. You will need these forms to fill out the FAFSA. If you are not able to complete your taxes by March 1, estimated tax information may be used but must be updated when taxes are available.
  3. Complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA instructions make the form easy to complete. Be sure to answer all questions completely and correctly. Mistakes and omissions delay the processing of your aid. List Midway College, school code 001975, on the last page of the FAFSA as the school to receive your information. If you apply online be sure to sign and send the signature page to the federal processor.
    1. Note: The FAFSA cannot be dated or mailed prior to January 1. The priority deadline for Kentucky is March 15.
    2. You should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) 4-6 weeks after you send your FAFSA. (1-2 weeks for FAFSA online). Follow the instructions listed on the first page of this report.
  4. If requested, submit all other materials to Midway’s Financial Aid Office.
  5. When all necessary information is received, the Financial Aid Office will send you an award letter stating the aid for which you are eligible.
